A couple of days ago, I was looking for a simple add-on in Firefox which would allow me to perform WHOIS queries without too much hassle. At first, I was overwhelmed by the a choice of no less than 28 different add-ons. However, after filtering out the experimental tools, the overly bulky and complicated tools, the tools which aren't ready for Firefox 3 even though it was released ages ago, I was left with two options. However, after I installed the first one, Firefox crashed without warning. The second one just didn't do anything; there was no button to click.

It seems there simply aren't any stable, light-weight and easy-to-use WHOIS add-ons available for Firefox 3.x just yet. We needed a solution, so instead of waiting around in the hope that someone else would upgrade their old add-on or a new one would be released, we've built the WHOIS look-up add-on for Firefox. It's already fully functional, so you can start using it right now. We'll be adding some additional features as soon as someone at Mozilla reviews the first version and changes its status from experimental to production-ready.

Some additional features to appear in the next version (which will be released very soon);

• Open your WHOIS query result in this tab or a new tab (load/open or load in the background).
• Move the WHOIS button anywhere you want to match your toolbar layout.
• Perform a WHOIS look-up on the URL in the address bar, so you don't even have to load that page first.
• Additional look-up tools include IP information, traceroute and Alexa data.
• Perform WHOIS for ccTLD's at the source. Some TLD providers do not provide contact details, now you can easily look up .be domains at DNS.be, .nl domains at SIDN.nl or .eur domains at EURid.
• Perform a WHOIS look-up for a hyperlink from the context menu by right-clicking it. No need to copy/paste first.
