Many companies are offering access to proprietary XML feeds for currency exchange rate data. However, these FX rates are available for free. Take a look at the implementation by Drupal's Currency Module for example, which prefetches currency conversion rates at Yahoo Finance and stores them locally in the database for future reference. It's recommended to use a cronjob for such tasks in order not to produce too much bandwidth or keep visitors waiting for too long.
